Private First Class Bater was a member of Headquarters Company, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. on August 11, 1950, he was on a motor patrol near Yongsan, South Korea, which was ambushed. He voluntarily remained in place holding off the enemy until mortally wounded. He died the next day.
