Sergeant First Class Bates was a veteran of World War II, fighting in Italy. In Korea, he was a member of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action while defending his position against massive Chinese forces at the Yalu River, North Korea on November 5, 1950.
