Sergeant Burcham was a medic serving with the Medical Company, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was seriously Wounded in Action by the enemy in South Korea on August 17, 1950 and returned to duty on November 4, 1950. He was wounded again while tending his wounded comrades near Kunu-ri, North Korea on December 1, 1950 and died of those wounds later that day. His remains were never recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
