Chief Warrant Officer, Third Class Chaney was a member of Troop A, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On May 3, 1968, he was the co-pilot of a Bell Cobra Attack Helicopter (AH-1G) serving as an armed escort for a reconnaissance team operating west of Khe Sanh, South Vietnam when the aircraft was hit by 37mm anti-aircraft fire, crashed and exploded. His remains were recovered on June 11, 1985 and identified on March 11, 2008. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
