Sergeant De Groat was a member of Company C, 10th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. He was working behind a truck that backed up and ran over him. He was evacuated to the 44th Surgical Hospital at Hyokchang-ni, Korea and died on September 28, 1953.Sergeant De Groat was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
