Major Deane was a member of Headquarters, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. On January 8, 1973, he was a passenger in a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1H) on a flight from Hue to Quang Tri, South Vietnam. After takeoff, contact with the aircraft was lost. His remains were recovered on August 27, 1996 and identified on October 4, 1999. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
