Staff Sergeant DeLong was a machine gunner with Company B, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On May 18, 1967, he was on a company size patrol in Ia Drang Valley, Pleiku Province, South Vietnam, when his platoon became separated from the rest of his company and was overrun. He was taken prisoner and died while in captivity. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
