For his leadership and valor, Corporal Erickson was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Corporal Erickson was a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. On February 14, 1951 a numerically superior enemy force attacked his position at Chungung-ni, South Korea. A nearby squad manning an outpost was subjected to intense fire which wounded all except one member. With complete disregard for the advancing enemy, he exposed his position, shifted his fire to cover the beleaguered squad and enabled its withdrawal to safety. He was mortally wounded by enemy fire.
