Lieutenant Commander Estes, U.S. Naval Reserve, was a member of Fighter Squadron 151, Carrier Air Wing 15 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS CORAL SEA (CVA-43). On November 19, 1967, he was the Radar Intercept Officer of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4B) on a mission near Haiphong, North Vietnam when his aircraft was shot down by a MiG aircraft. It is believed he was taken prisoner and died in captivity. His remains were recovered on September 30, 1977 and identified on October 25, 1977. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
