Private First Class Gaitan was a medic with the Clearing Company, 2nd Medical Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. He was taken Prisoner of War while tending his wounded comrades near Hoengsong, South Korea on February 13, 1951 and died while a prisoner on May 24, 1951. He died in POW Camp 1 near Changsong, North Korea. His remains were recovered in 1954 and identified on September 13, 2011. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
