Staff Sergeant Hughes was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was critically Wounded in Action while fighting the enemy along the Naktong River front by an anti-personnel mine on September 5, 1950 and died later that day.
