Private La Vala was a member of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. On July 31, 1950, the North Koreans launched an attack on Chinju, South Korea. After the ensuing battle, he was listed as Missing in Action but later it was determined that he had been killed while fighting the enemy.
