First Lieutenant McGovern was a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On January 30,1951, he was leading his platoon in an attack of an enemy machine-gun emplacement near Kamyangjan-ni, South Korea, when he came under intense enemy fire. Although severely wounded and his carbine was blown out of his hand, he continued his lone attack, firing his pistol and throwing back enemy grenades and killing seven until he was killed.
