Lieutenant McKinney, U.S. Naval Reserve, was a member of Fighter Squadron 114, Carrier Air Wing 11 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS KITTY HAWK (CVA-63). On April 14, 1972, he was the radar intercept officer of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4J) on a bombing mission at the Demilitarized Zone. On the aircraft's bombing run it was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crashed. His remains were recovered on August 14, 1985 and identified on February 8, 1988. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
