Herbert George Mecke was born in Bulverde, Texas on November 10, 1896. He married Eugenia Coblentz and had three children. In 1922, he was working as a marine engineer in San Francisco, California. On March 7, 1922, he applied to leave the United States for the first time to go to Colombia for employment. He became a miner working for the Panama Canal Company. He died on December 18, 1945 from Pulmonary Tuberculosis at the Samaritan Hospital in Colon, Panama. He was buried at the Mt. Hope Cemetery then reinterred at the Corozal American Cemetery in 1979.
