Sergeant First Class Monaco was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a medic with the Medical Company attached to Company G, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. He was listed as Missing in Action while tending his wounded comrades near Ruksu-ri, North Korea on December 4, 1950. He was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
