Lieutenant Junior Grade Mossman, U.S. Naval Reserve, was a member of Attack Squadron 72, Carrier Air Wing 7 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS INDEPENDENCE (CVA-62). On September 13, 1965, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4E) on an armed reconnaissance near Dong Hoi, Quang Binh Province, North Vietnam when his aircraft was hit by small arms fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
