For his leadership and valor, Sergeant Piwoni was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Sergeant Piwoni was a member of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. Initially he was assigned to the 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, when he was seriously wounded by the enemy in South Korea on August 18, 1950 and returned to duty on September 9, 1950. He was transferred to the 1st Cavalry Division and later listed as Missing in Action while fighting the enemy in North Korea on November 28, 1950. He was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
