Chief Warrant Officer, Third Class Riggs was a member of Company C, 227th Aviation Battalion, 11th Aviation Group, 1st Cavalry Division (Airborne). On June 11, 1967, he was the pilot of a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1D) departing Qui Non on an operations mission in Binh Dinh Province, South Vietnam. The aircraft ran into bad weather then ran out of fuel and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
