Lieutenant Rittichier was a member of 37th Air Rescue and Recovery Squadron, U.S. Coast Guard. On June 9, 1968, he was flying in a Sikorsky Sea King Search and Rescue Helicopter (HH-3E) over Laos when he was declared Missing in Action. His remains were recovered on February 14, 2003 and identified on September 11, 2003. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
