Private Santopietro was a member of Company A, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. On May 7, 1952, he was a member of a night patrol with the mission of penetrating the enemy lines near Sag-i-nak, North Korea and capturing an enemy soldier. As the patrol approached the enemy trenches, the enemy delivered devastating fire. Private Santopietro, although wounded, fired at an enemy machine gun position until it was silenced. He was mortally wounded shortly thereafter.
