Corporal Schoening was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Corporal Schoening was a member of Company C, 65th Engineer Combat Battalion, 25th Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded by the enemy in South Korea on September 4, 1950 and returned to duty on September 27, 1950. He was listed as Missing in Action while fighting the enemy in North Korea on November 27, 1950. He was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were recovered on August 15, 2000 and identified on February 25, 2009. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
