Sergeant First Class Sitman was the section leader of a machine-gun section in Company M, 3rd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. On February 14, 1951 near Chipyong-ni, South Korea, while attached to Company I, he selflessly fell on a live grenade to protect the 5 men around him.
