Private First Class Spitler was a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded by the enemy in North Korea on August 11, 1952 and returned to duty on August 22, 1952. On September 6, 1952, he was on duty at "Listening Post Agnes", Hill 1052 in the Satae-ri Valley, North Korea when he was killed during an enemy assault.
