Major Thorne was a member of Headquarters, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. On October 18, 1965, he was a passenger in a South Vietnamese Air Force Sikorsky Choctaw Cargo Helicopter (CH34) when it crashed about 25 miles southwest of Da Nang, South Vietnam. His remains were recovered on March 15, 2002 and identified on June 4, 2003. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
