Major Wester was a member of the 557th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Cam Ranh Bay Air Base, South Vietnam. On July 5, 1968, he was the co-pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4C) on a mission over North Vietnam, when his aircraft was hit by a hostile missile and exploded. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
