Lieutenant Commander Wilson was the patrol plane commander of a PBM-5 Mariner patrol bomber with Patrol Squadron 731, based at San Diego, California. On November 27, 1951, while on a training flight, the aircraft spun in seven miles off San Diego coast, killing 11 crewmen.
