Seven ABMC cemeteries will participate in Le Printemps des Cimetières event

Seven ABMC cemeteries will participate in the 8th edition of Le Printemps des Cimetières, a French national event dedicated to the discovery of funerary heritage, to happen May 12, 13, 14, 2023. 

This year, Brittany, Luxembourg, Normandy, Rhone, Somme, St. Mihiel American Cemeteries and Lafayette Escadrille Memorial Cemetery are taking part in this edition, the theme of which is dedicated to cemeteries and symbols. For the occasion, these ABMC cemeteries will host special activities and tours. 

Program details can be found below: 

Brittany American Cemetery 

May 13 – 2:30 p.m. 

May 14 – 2:30 p.m.  

Program: Guided tours will be provided by our staff, talking visitors through the different symbols to be found throughout this World War II cemetery.

Lafayette Escadrille Memorial Cemetery 

May 12 – 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. 

May 13 – 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. 

May 14 – 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. 

Program: Guided tours of the Memorial will be provided on the symbols of commemoration and the differences between national and personal commemoration. 
Meeting point: At the memorial. 
This event is free and requires registration.

Luxembourg American Cemetery 

May 12 – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

May 13 – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

May 14 – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Program: Visitors will be able to go on a self-guided tour that will discuss the symbols to be found throughout the cemetery, from the stained-glass windows of the chapel to the mosaic located inside, to the meaning behind the monumental fountain of the cemetery. 

Meeting point: Leaflets will be available inside the visitor building, at the entrance of the site.

Normandy American Cemetery

Program: Follow the Memory Trail and discover the Normandy American Cemetery through short thematic presentations (20 minutes). Plan for a total of 1hr 15 minutes.

Rhone American Cemetery 

May 12 – 10 a.m., 3 p.m.

Program: Our staff will guide you through this cemetery, a place to remember the uniqueness of human existence, sharing the stories of those who served in the United States Armed Forces during World War II fighting for freedom from Nazi occupation.

Somme American Cemetery 

May 12 – 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

May 13 – 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

May 14 – 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

Program: Our staff will guide visitors through the symbols to be found in the cemetery, to include specific sculptures and the overall architecture of this World War I cemetery. 

This event is free and open to the public (no registration necessary).

St. Mihiel American Cemetery 

May 12 – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

May 13 – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

May 14 – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Program: Guided tours will be provided all day long, focusing on symbols such as those pertaining to both the United States and France, the Pegasus funeral urn to be found in the cemetery, and the rosettes placed on the Wall of the Missing.
