Private First Class Foss was a member of the 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On September 29, 1951, he was wounded and returned to duty shortly thereafter. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy near Hill 346, "Old Baldy" in North Korea on October 19, 1951.
