For his leadership and valor, Corporal Vance was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Notes
Corporal Vance was a member of Company K, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. Twice he singlehandedly, successfully attacked enemy positions. On July 14, 1951, near Hwanchon, North Korea, he was delaying the enemy and when his ammunition expired, he fought with his bayonet until mortally wounded.
